In most cases, what is required is that a backflow be installed at the point of service to your property. Point of service is typically where your water meter is located. The water authority

You may have received a notice from you local Health Department or inspector, requiring that you install a backflow valve on the water inlet to a piece of equipment located inside your property. This could include the installation of a backflow on your irrigation system, soda equipment, pump or any equipment where the potable water is being used to treat or mix with an industrial agent. Backflow valves keep that bad water from entering the water meant for consumption.

Once your New Backflow Valve is installed, you're going to want to protect it from tampering and theft. Backflows are made of brass. "Brass' means $$$ at the scrap yard for brass 

and copper thieves.  Backflows are also a source for water. DId you receive and astronomical water bill? Chances are, someone is taking water water from your backflow valve.
