These backflow preventers aren't always small. In many cities throughout Southern California, water purveyors will require that old service protection systems, mostly housed in vaults, be upgraded, and in many cases brought up above ground.

Newly established state and local laws are requiring backflow protection at the service connection on your property, and it's not always for commercial buildings. Many residential properties are now being required to have these units installed

Your local Health Department may also require that there be backflow protection on a piece of equipment located internally. Any piece of equipment that is plumbed in with the same waterlines supplying water used to wash your hands or face, drink or clean with needs have a backflow preventer to keep that same water safe from contamination.
